Logon session not working

Apache, PHP4.2.3, MYSql : I am trying a tutorial on logon/authentication/session with MYSQL database as on the DevShed site. I created the database, tables made sure the permissions are correct etc... As soon as I put in the username and password and press logon it directs me to a "Internal Server Error" Can this be due to php.ini misconfiguration? Can anyone please give me a bit of direction...
