We have a old windows 2000 DC which we wish to demote as all other DC's are 03, this will enable us to raise the functional level.

Anyway, the old DC is no longer a GC and ready for demotion. Problem is a few of the more critical servers already have this box set as the logon server . I also noticed that when i boot my laptop it uses this old dc as its logon server. I beleived that when it was taken out of the role of a GC it didnt service logon requests ? Also Im surprised most client didnt go to the two other faster Windows 2003 DC's

Any ideas how to stop this box servicing logon requests ?

Does the 2000 box hold any of the FSMO roles??

Open a command prompt and type the following to find out;

netdom query fmso

If it does transfer the roles to one of the 2003 dc's

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

Hi

There are no FSMO roles applied to this box, it has never held any of the roles in the past.

Thanks

Dave

Just DCPROMO it out of the domain...the systems will logon through the other servers.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

If the server does not hold any roles and you still see it as the logon server you need n't worry as soon as that DC is demoted the clients will look for a logon server elsewhere. It could be because they used that one before it then goes back to it.

If you did want this server to be used less you can in DNS change the weight/priority levels.

Thanks chaps,

I'll just demote it then and remove, makes sense, i'll reboot the servers that need to find a new logon server and go from there

Many Thanks

Dave
