Logon APS failures in 8.5

While trying to log into the 8.5 APS from within CR 8.5, I either get a logon to APS failure, Crystal goes away indefinitely, or it causes a CRW32.exe exception and blows abruptly.

Anyone else having problems along these lines?

Anyone successful with CE 8.5?

I have installed CR8.5 Pro on three WIN2k workstations. I can only connect to the APS on one of the three workstations, which (coincidentally) has CE8 Pro installed (my test box). The machine that works was a clean installation. The machines that don't work (same symptoms as yours) previously had one of Info 6, Info 7 or CR8 Pro installed. Prior to installing CR8.5 Pro, I had uninstalled the various other versions and had manually deleted the various left-over directories (Seagate Software, Crystal etc...).

I have an open ticket with CD about this issue, but they've yet to come up with a good resolution. Their suggestion was to fully uninstall CR 8.5 including manual directory and registry key deletion and then do a 'Complete' installation of CR8.5 again. This didn't work (multiple times, btw) on either of the non working workstations.

Frankly, I'm pretty upset about this since the two primary CR developers (me being one of them) can't access any of the reports on the APS though the Enterprise Folders on our primary workstations.

Thanks, Rhinok.

I'm told that this machine did NOT have a previous install of anything, except perhaps a partial CR 8.5, so the answer is probably deeper then they're trying to pass off.

Sorry that you had to be th guinea pig, but try to take solace in knowing that you've saved someone the headache of trying to fix it until there's an official solution, and that I owe you a beverage of your choice as a result.

- Update -

After spending close to an hour on the telephone with CD this morning, the Tech Support Rep suggested that I look in my application event log for any error messages. Why didn't I think of this before?! Sure enough, I received the following message everytime I uninstalled and reinstalled the APS Admin Plugin:

"Error: Failed to install plugin CrystalEnterprise.APSAdmin due to the following reason: Failed to register plug-in."

When I compared a working installation to a non-working installation I found that the following key was not being created:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Seagate Software\8.0\Seagate Info\Admin Plugins\CrystalEnterprise.APSAdmin

I tried to manually create the key, but received the following error message:

"Cannot create key: Error while opening the key Seagate Info"

The CD Rep tried to tell me that this was due to permissions, but I was skeptical since I have Administrative rights on the non-working machine. Actually, I have the exact same rights under the same User ID on both the non-working and the working machine. Besides, I can add or delete other keys at will, even within the main Seagate Software folder.

Just for grins and giggles I fully uninstalled CR (including manual directory and registry deletions, again). One thing I noticed is that I cannot delete or rename the Seagate Software registry folder (which is now mostly empty). Regedit returns an error message when I attempt to do so.

Next I logged on under a local administrative User ID (as oppposed to my User ID which is a network user in the local administrators group) as 'workstation only'. I then performed a 'Complete' installation. Once the installation was complete, I was actually able to connect to the APS!!! Woohoo!!! The caveat was that any report I attempted to change and save back to the APS resulted in the following error message:

"Critical error while attempting to communicate with the APS"

CD KB article c2009509 states that this happens when one attempts to add a new report to CE via the Enterprise Folders in CR. Doesn't apply to me. I just want to modify and save what's already there[mad].

Next, I installed the Crystal Publishing Wizard (still logged in as the local admin) as a standalone application. After I rebooted my workstation (just for kicks), I was able to successfully login to the APS. Even better, I was able to successfully save a modified report on the APS![2thumbsup].

Flushed with my success, I performed all the exact same steps on the other non-working worksation. Unfortunately, these steps did nothing to resolve the original issue - I still can't connect to the APS. My frustration level is still very high, I still have a ticket open with CD and I really want that beverage synapsevampire offered;-)

That's a whole lotta effort, and I really appreciate you sharing this.

You've an odd way of getting your grins and giggles, my friend... I don't think I'll attempt anything as of yet, it sounds like you unveiled the problem, that being a registry entry, unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a sure fire solution...

I'll just suffer the loss of existing instances for now, I'm still spleen deep in report and CSP development anyway.

Thanks again, and if you're ever in the SF area, I'll redeem your beverage token anytime.

Maybe I am misunderstanding it, but is this original question about connecting from CR 8.5 to CE 8.5? If so, please check the release notes onthe CE 8.5 CD - you have to install an update on all CR 8.5 machines in order for it to connect to CE 8.5.
It is entirely possible that I just confused your versions. So if your questions are about CE8 - please ignore.

/bonk rhinok

I just reread the original question and it does state CR8.5 to CE 8.5, however, I do have the same issue and I'm connecting from CR8.5 to CE 8.

RoughIT: Thanks for the tip.

The update apparently allows me to logon, though I don't see an option to Save As to the Enterprise, any thoughts?

Is there a setting required to allow it? I tried the adminstrator account, and another account.

CE8.5 is on the same machine that has CR8.5, does that matter?
