the LogOff function is part of Active Desktop. Install IE4.01 to get AD, and then upgrade back to IE5 or 5.5.
Log Off will then appear.

on you can download a program that manipulates with many such things.
I´ve deleted that annoying button myself (do you also have a long login-name?)
there is also (of course) a tweak in the registry. But if you download the program it does the tweaking for you.
