Login to system

Hi,
1.How do you check if you want to known that someone logon to your system? Which file save the log?
2.I just want to vi the file and make some change in that file but I want to keep the current date of that file.How can i do it?

1) at the command line give the command "last"
If it scrolls past too quick do:
last | more
