I have a XP Pro and am trying to log into our NT 4 domain. (the PDC is running Windows NT 4 server with all current service packs)

When I run the Network ID Wizard on the XP it says "A domain controler for the domain WORKGROUP could not be contacted."

I have connected more than fifteen xp pro machines to this network, why is this one giving me problems? I have compaired all the settings I can find in the TCP/IP properties box to the other XPs and they are identicle.

Any suggestions?

1. Can you ping the domain controller?

2. Is the name of the domain: Workgroup?

I can browse the server, I just can't get the XP pro authenticated and giver the necessary privelages.

The domain is called "WORKGROUP"

I had a similar problem a while back and found it was due to a dodgy network cable connection. Sometimes everything seems fine (basic cable testers show everything to be OK) but re-crimping the connectors or even cutting them off and fitting new ones can do the trick.

Put the problem machine onto a known working connection (one of the other fifteen)and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, try another NIC (if the one in the PC is integrated, disable it in the BIOS before fitting the NIC). NIC's can and do fail in odd ways, and not always completely. Is the cable you're using wired to the same scheme as the others?

Presumably your computer and user accounts are OK?

I agree with Mitch7 that the problem seems likely to be hardware related.

But make sure that you did not enter manually any DNS entries into TCP/IP settings for the machine. If the DNS entries are pointing to the WAN side, and not the LAN side, XP will not find the PDC. On a related note, make certain that the IP if set manually is unique on the Network.
