logging on - entering correct password returns user to dialog box

One particular user has a problem logging onto peer to peer networked machine running NT4 workstation. On entering user name and password there is a slight pause and the dialog box reappears at the "Ctrl Alt Del to log on" dialog. All account details appear correct and other users can log on using their own user name/ pasword combos. Could this be a virus problem or is there a simple solution?

Have you tried changing the users password?
Have you tried recreating the user account?

thanks for the advice - I'ved tried recreating the account and password. I now get "OS unable to load profile" looking at the profile dialog box it tells me that profiles are not mandatory. i also have no other profiles for users on that box or any other on the network. any suggestions gratefully received!!

Hey.
Ok, if people are logging on they have profiles. When you say they do not, how and where are you looking for them?
Log in as the local administrator and go to C:\winnt\profiles
There will be a profile for each user who has logged on. Administrator may have two if you have logged the domain administrator on, this one is the administrator.000 folder.

Next thing, rename the dodgy users profile and log out and back in as that user to recreate it.
Do you have any specific requirements from your profiles? if not you might as well delete that profile now. The new profile will be created from the DefaultUser template, edit that one as required for all new profiles.

Solved - sort of

thanks (Pritch) for your last response. I was looking for profiles in 2 places: first as administrator..through user manager..user propererties..profile (this box is headed user environment profile rather than just user profile) and context help on this assured me that filling in boxes was discretionary).

Secondly: through Windows explorer, winnt\profiles as you suggested. The renaming trick didn't work and logging back in as this particluar user still came back with the message "os unable to load profile". In the end I copied a user profile that works and then renamed it from within the user manager utility. This now works ok but I'm still puzzled as to the reasons behind the original problem. however, user is now happy.
