Logging in via remote desktop XP Pro SP3 problems

Hi

I was hoping someone would be able to help me out please as I have been struggling on this problem for over a year - yes you heard it correct over a year ?

The problem I have is I’m trying to get windows remote desktop to work externally (I know there are people who keep telling me to use logmein/teamviewer but I don’t really want to use anything but remote desktop for some other reasons). I have remote desktop working in my house, I tested the home PC with my laptop and it worked (even though It took me absolutely ages as I had to narrow down the problem to mcafee firewall so now I have enabled remote desktop port 3389 in Mcafee). When I go out of town to my sisters house and I try to log onto my home computer It’s not letting me on for some reason, my knowledge of computers is not that great so please be gentle with me.

Both of the computers are XP Professional SP3, and my computer/laptop at home is behind a netgear router (In Netgear I went on to remote management and changed the port from 8080 to 3389).

Now when I’m at my sisters house and I open remote desktop I enter

http://94.171.XXX.43:3389/

but that just shows my router interface? I have also tried my pc dhcp ip address 192.168.1.5 and

http://94.171.XXX.43:3389/192.168.1.5

but again I can only see the router interface.

If I’m doing something which is really stupid then I’m sorry its just I don’t have that much knowledge of computers ? I have disabled my windows firewall.

Please help me, I will be forever grateful as I’m loosing the will to live.

1. change the port back to 8080 on the router
2. setup a virtual server on the router, point it to the pc in question (192.168.1.5) with the propper port (3389)

if you want to save energy and protect the enviorment get a router wich can send wol packets and set the pc to wake on wol, that way it doesnt need to run the whole day

Ok, I have changed it back to 8080 but I dont understand the second part sorrry but how do I setup a virtual server on my netgear router? Thanks

You'll need to setup what's known as port forwarding.

This tells your router what to do when it receives a request from Remote Desktop. It forwards the request to a specific computer inside the router's local network.


In your routers configuration page there should be an option either Port Forwarding or Services depending on which specific router you have.

This should be able to guide you through.

I have resolved the issue, how do I edit the first post so I can remove the ip address please? This is a security concern for me.

You can use the 'Red Flag' link at the bottom of that post, then put a note to the site admins. However, it is not really a security issue. First, you didn't post the whold thing. Second, even if you did it doesn't change that the address exists - most hacking scans just go through all the possible IP addresses in a range, wether they are posted somewhere on the internet or not.

Too late. We've got your IP address now. You're doomed.

Don't worry - even if your ip address changes, there's probably already lots of hacker types using port scanners to find open ports on IP addresses all around the world.

That's what those people do to find open spots and vulnerabilities. Just have a good password for your RDP.
