I'm using ARCserve 9 on Win 2K system.
I'd like to know if there is a way the server to produce a log file (that I share over the network) that shows clearly the status of the job done (parameter, time, errors, and so on).

Use the Alert manager. You can configure it to send alerts combined with the logfile for a specific job.
Check the manuals on how to configure this

It works only with Exchange server ?
I have another SMTP server.

With ARCserve v9 it also works with SMTP. Configure this first through the Alert Manager and send a test message, if this works you can set it up in the backup job.
