What I have done is have a hidden form that is always running in the background.
The hidden form has a timer control that periodically queries a table on the backend. The table might be called app_config or something and has a field called log_out. If the log_out field has a Yes, I initiate an application quit on the front-end db the user is using. Normally I will bring up a message box that warns the app will be shut down in n minutes so the user can save data.
