Log Off user problem

I have 2 users set up. We are finding that when one user logs off, with the other user logged on, that the welcome screen does not appear. We get a black screen with a flashing white underscore cursor. I have to reboot the machine in order to get out of this.
I have plenty of RAM, 512 MB, and it is usually only about 50% used.
Can anyone suggest a remedy?

Looks like a corrupted users profile.
Fastest solution, back up any files needed and rebuild the machine.
