I ran a test to force a log full situation. I created a test db with automatic expansion (1MB). The log file was created at 1MB with no expansion. I set up an alert with email to me and system operator - also net send to both.
I ran an insert to five (integer) columns - looped.
Ultimately, after 310k rows inserted, the db file was 16MB and the log file was 1,024kb. The insert disconnected several times - at which time I checked the file sizes and restarted. The db file kept growing but the log file reached and remained at 1,024kb.
There was never an alert fired, nor message sent/received. The NT Event Viewer indicated no error messages for system or applications.

1)Was the log file (circular) dropping off transactions at the end of 1,024kb and continuing to add the newest?
2)Why no log full (9002) message?

SQL Server 7.0 sp 1 on NT4 sp 5.
