Hi,

I am new to Unix. In fact I know very little about it. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any freeware that may be available that would monitor various log files in unix and email/page the administrator when a defined error occurs.

Thanks a ton

Lakshmi.

There is a utility called logmon that you might be able to find on the web.

Swatch is one - "Swatch stands for Simple WATCHer. Other log analysis software scans the logs periodically, they can tell you what HAS happened. Swatch can do this, but it can also actively scan log entries as syslogd gets them and tell you what IS happening. Not only this, swatch can also take actions when it encounters certain log messages."

If you really want to monitor all your unix system, then try Big Brother - :) TandA

Hi,

In reference to log file monitoring, is there a UNIX command that I can use to dial a tel # rather than sending a text message using mailx to my cell phone?

Thanks,
Suhas
