locking deskop do not work why ?

Have you tried to run the "xlock" program from a shell command line? If it works then you're menu is mucked up... Sorry I don't do gnome so I can't help there.
If not then try & get it on your system... err it may be there but you can't run it directly ($PATH, or permissions, whathaveyou).
