Locked out with shutdown.exe

On my test machine I was installing Internet Explorer using SMS 2.0. I created an iesetup.exe using iesetup.ipf and using the shutdown.exe command. This way during the install it will reboot and automatically login as the administrator. My problem is that it won't login and now I can't do anything with the machine because the iesetup.ipf disables your keyboard and mouse. How do I get control of the mouse and keyboard again?

There are a couple of things you can do. Assuming the machine is still on the network you can remotely connect to its registry with Administrator rights (of course). Once connected you can try to enable the disabled device drivers for keyboard and mouse. Depending on O/S and machine hardware you might beable to do this dynamically, without a reboot. If you do have to reboot, make sure you clear out of Run/RunOnce/RunAsService anything that might disable the mouse/keyboard again at startup.

Another option is to use ERD Commander 2000 from SysInternals. This can also enable device drivers.

I attempted to use iesetup on a test group and the lockup problem was common.

When I simply did a hard-reset the system would usually be usable on startup. Sometimes it was still in the middle of the install and would be OK if you let it finish (or do the reset again if it locks up again).

Overall I found the iesetup installation to be a slow process on the client machines because we have disclaimer windows that always open and iesetup can't proceed until the window times out(?).
