Hi, problem hasn't occurred yet, just want to be prepared. But if a user opens a document by selecting edit in MS Word but doesnt check it out is there a way an administrator can unlock the document so someone else can edit.

I'm just thinking in the case of a PC losing power or something and the document not closing properly and SPS thinks the user still has it open. Happens occasionally with an NTFS file systemn can it happen in SPS and if so how would you close it without rebooting the SPS server?

The file is not locked when the users click the edit option. Only when the check out is used it provents others working on it. If they edit the document and someone also opens it and makes changes the last person saving the document will overwrite the other person changes.

When fustrated remember, In the computer world there is allmost always a backdoor.

Interesting, yesterday I was sitting at my desktop logged in as me and had a laptop logged in with a test account. I opened a document as the test account just by clicking on the doc name, did a couple of saves, left the doc open. When I went to the doc library on my PC it doesnt show as checked out,if I try and make a change and save it I get a msgbox that says.

cannot be accessed. The file may not exist or may be in use or the Web server is temporarily busy.

The same thing happens if I open it with Edit in MS word. Like I said not an issue at the moment, and if noone else has actually had a problem of a file being locked hopefully I wont either. :)
