Let me give a backgroud first. SMS 2.0 sp1, Nt server 4, and the secondary site is sitting on a BDC. With this site and only this site we get a large amount of failures do to resource already in use. Everything on the server looks fairly healthy and the only place we have seen these Sharing violations is in the Smspkgd$ share. This has happened with 5 packages some worse than others but the amount of failures seems to relate to the size of the package or the .exe that is called. One of the packages had a 10meg exe and only 3 installed out of 80. This is the message I get:

An error occurred while preparing to run the program
advertisement "1002002D" ("Internet Explorer" - "IE
5.01 Setup"). The
operating system reported error 170: The requested
resource is in use.
Additional program properties:
Command line: \\xxxxxx\SMSPKGD$\10000009\IESetup.EXE
Working directory: \\xxxxxx\SMSPKGD$\10000009 Drive letter
(? = any): UNC

The xxxxx were put in there by me. I cannot find any good documention on the MS site. The file is locked at the point of the error and seems to release it self like 30 min or so later. Any ideas? Any place I could look to get a better grasp on this? TIA

What is the user limit set to on the share? Is it set to allow maximum users? Did you allow SMS to create the share, or did you create the share and allow SMS to use it as a DP?

There is no user limit on the share and SMS created the share to be used as the DP.

We have had the same problem installing the Security updates tool. There have been failures with the same error as you have and running the advertisement again does not work. Have you had any luck in resolving this?
