I work in a large enterprise with large numbers of servers in multiple DBMS versions (DB2, Oracle, SQL, Sybase). We have a repository of information, however, one of the obvious challenges is keeping it accurate and up-to-date. We've looked into "scanners" but almost everything we've found does way more than we need for this purpose and, because of that, usually requires something on the host (like log in credentials), etc....
What we really need is something lite that will scan a subnet we define (i.e. all addresses within that range) and just return back the host name & DBMS if it's a DB server (we don't even need version info). We can then use that as a "hit list" for our DBAs to look into.
Any ideas?
