localhost problems

I have a RedHat ver.9.0 running.
I am trying to do a ping localhost and nothing comes back!
I know I have the /etc/hosts correct because I have another box running RedHat 9.0 and I have no problems pinging localhost. I can do a ping of 127.0.0.1 without a problem.
Is there someplace else I should be looking?

On the box with the problem, if you ping localhost, what exactly happens?

If I ping localhost nothing happens
If I ping 127.0.0.1 I get the normal information of a ping.
In other words it works when I do "ping 127.0.0.1"

Define "nothing happens". You just immediately get another ready prompt?

ping: unknown host localhost
[hansonr@linux hansonr]$

Just for future reference, an application error output and "nothing happens" are nowhere near equivalent.

What are the permissions on /etc/hosts?
