I have a Wide Area Network between two sites. On the remote site we have a few inkjet printers that in the past we have been able to add the the terminal sessions so that the users can still print to their local printer. I know this isn't ideal and I am tryiong to gte them to buy a networked Colour laser but hey where IT we have to make the impossible happen or we are crap at our jobs. Usuaally we allow the printer to be seen by active directory and then you can click it and it installs but they stopped working and now it says you do not have permission to access this device but they have been working which rules out permissions. Anyone any ideas

I know you have ruled out permissions but try giving users full access to the printers. By default all users have is access to print only. Also make sure there are no print times set in the properties.

And since they are local printers:

1. make sure the computers have File and Print Sharing enabled.
2. make sure the Windows Firewall is allowing access

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks guys, think we have resolved it with the drivers on the terminal servers. Strange though as we have had these printers working already.

Hello twicki,

if your clients trying to install the printer drivers by clicking, this means that they are using the point and print functionality.

If you set the following policies to disabled on the server where the printers or the drivers hosted they will be able to install the drivers.

Local Computer Policies > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Printers

Point and Print Restrictions to disabled
Prevent addition of printers to disabled
Prevent deletion of printers to disabled

As long as the mentioned above printers is set to "not configured" they can behave as disabled or enabled.

I have had this experience.I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
