Hello

I am trying to connect to local copy of SQL Server 2000 using Enterprise Manager.

This is my work pc and connects fine to our servers - but when I try to connect to a local copy that I can use for testing, I can't.

These are my steps...

Right click SQL Server Group
Select "New SQL Server Registration"
Click next on wizard
Select "(local)"
Click "Add"
Click "Next"
Leave default "Connect using the windows account information I use to log on to my computer (Windows Authentication)

Click Next
Leave default for "Select SQL Server Group"
next
Finish

The Status message reads - (LOCAL) - SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

I've also tried my first initial + last name instead of (local)

What can I do to create a local test version of a SQL database that is only accessable from my PC?

Thanks
Dave

Its possible you installed a named instance and as such need it specified (its also possible you only installed the client tools without a DB setup.

You can check this either by looking at services or a small application

I guess you will probably need to check these things first, otherwise you may need to install SQL again, this time ensuring server is installed.

I tried to install 2000 developer edition - I selected the defaults and named

SQL Server 2000 Components

Install Database Server

I'm selecting the defaults / windows authentication

I named my local instance "DAVE" and this directory was created

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$DAVE

but I get the same message when I try connecting with Enterprise Manager

I also made the local instance the same name as my windows login

Thanks for any help
Dave

Try connecting to it via

local\DAVE

or your ipaddress\dave e.g.

192.168.0.2\Dave

A named instance needs the full name specified.
