Local mail being deferred??

I've been running a qmail server for about 3 years. All of a sudden local mail is being deferred and I get the following messages in the log:

deferral: Temporary_error_on_maildir_delivery._

Nothing has changed in the configuration or MailDir permissions.

Any suggestions??? I have 1500 messages stuck in the queue!

I will also add that at some point over the weekend some of the messages were sent to the local mailboxes. This just seems to be affecting local delivery.
