I'm creating a domain default user profile, this time, by following the Microsoft (PITA) method.

As part of that profile I want a set of Favourites which also appear on the Favourites bar. Specifically:
[ul]
[li]BBC Homepage[/li]
[li]Bloomberg.com[/li]
[li]Reuters.com[/li]
[li]our intranet[/li]
[/ul]
The first three are easy, and both Bloomberg and BBC get a nice looking icon next to the address/description (Reuters couldn't be bothered!)

Our intranet isn't so easy because the profile and PC I'm using aren't on the domain, so the intranet denies access. I could enter some credentials when prompted but I don't want any evidence of that being saved to the profile I'm creating so that's an-no.

So, I know each web server makes a favicon available for download to each client but where is that icon stored locally on the client PC? If I can find that out then I can copy the icon to the default profile I'm creating and the icon will then automatically look nice for each user even before they've logged on to each website from that PC...

Examining the properties of the icon just leads to shell32.dll as the source of the icon image, and it's clearly not there.

Just to be clear, if you go to Bloomberg.com, add a Favourite to your Favourites Bar then browse to "C:\Users\<you>\Favorites\Links" you'll see the shortcut in there with the orange B icon. That icon will have been downloaded from the Bloomberg.com web server, but where is that icon stored on your PC?

"If you or someone else using your computer has recently cleared your Internet cache the favicons will be lost in many browsers because they're stored in this temporary cache".

Information about favicon.ico

This is an old program but it might still work in Windows 7, I don't know?

"FavOrg will fix this problem and ensure that your favicons are made sticky. That is, once downloaded, the icon will be assigned to the shortcut permanently. FavOrg stores the favicons in a user-defined folder".

Thanks, Linney.

Since my OP I found that the icons are (pretty obviously!) stored in the user's Temporary Internet Files folder but oddly all stored as favicon.ico.

What? More than one file with the same name in the same folder? How?!

Well, when you look at the file properties you find the "Cache name" is favicon[2].ico, so that somehow sorts out the duplicate names...or so I thought until I found two favicon[2].ico Cache names!

Anyway, thanks again, I'll look at those two links tomorrow at work.
