Local Direct Dial from external Modem to R6

Using PACS R8.0.0.4 admin software, I am trying to connect to the remote access PCMCIA card in the R6 processor by using direct dial (local). I am dialing ext 76 from my external modem at the PC. The PCMCIA modem answers, I received dialog box stating connected at 14400bps. The dialog box remains for 30 seconds, then message states "cannot establish session" I stay connected, but cannot perform any actions (such as retrieve translations. Any help appreciated.

Did you assign a password to the R6.0 processor using #730?

You won't be able to login and communicate via remote access on any Partner ACS unless you assign a password to the system using #730.

Try starting at 1200bps & see what speed it's likes to talk

I tried several different speeds and the modem dialog box that appears always reads "connected at 14400bps".
I am connecting to the modem, I never receive the password prompt. Unable to establish session with system appears after 30 seconds. I stay connected passed that but never receive password prompt. I should be able to connect to an R6 processor, correct?

Establishing a connection to a Partner ACS via the remote access card is difficult at best. It got to the point where Avaya decided, starting with the R7 processor, to add a dedicated port so you could connect and external modem to the processor.

If the settings are correct, the answer may be to try a different external modem. The US Robotics Sportster seems to fare better than others.

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

What are the chances that you could use a serial port on your computer, a 355 adapter, and plug directly into the admin port on the ACS?

Also, what other cards are in the carrier along with the ACS?

The R6 has no admin port. Has contact closure and smdr.
No carrier. Stand alone processor.
I tried the sportster. Got better results with the Zoom 56K USB, but still will not establish session.

You could have a bad RAC (Remote Access Card) PCMCIA. It contains the modem chip for the ACS. They DO go bad!

Sorry, read the version of software you're using, glossed over the release of your ACS. Yeah, I'd try another RAC card.

Problem solved!!
I want to thank everyone for their response.
I am running Windows XP on my laptop.
I purchased a Zoom 56K V.92/V90 Model 3095 USB Mini External Modem.
I learned every time I change the modem connect speed (ie 4800,9600,etc) I would have to restart my computer before it would take effect. I set the modem speed at max speed in the drop down list, then did a restart.
I connected to the R6 RAC automatically at 14400bps, received the password dialog box (for the first time) and it worked like a charm.
Now I can carry the external modem in my pocket and not have to "lug" around the Robotics Sportster.
It also connects to legend & magix but you have to set the modem connect speed to 2400 then restart.
Again, the modem connect speed to Partner is max and the speed for legend/magix is 2400.
