Hi all,

I help a non-profit org. with their computer needs. Recently they received a PC with Unix OS. I wish to format it and load Win2kPro on it (have a bootable CD). I've never formatted a Unix m/c before and would appreciate a step by step procedure of formatting a Unix m/c to load Win2k on it or a direction to a website ..

Thank you for your help.

Have you ever installed 2k before? You might have an issue with the mbr, but it all likelyhood, you just need to boot off the cd, run setup, and remove the partition. Create a new one, format with ntfs, and install. See how it goes.

I'ld also recommend buying a 2k book if loading this os is new to you.

Matt J.

P.S. Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Thank you for your input Matt. Yes I have installed Win2k a number of times. Will try what you suggested. In the meantime, could you elaborate on the MBR issue ??

Have a good one.

As mentioned, go ahead and run the Win2k set up. It will allow you to delete current partitions and then create new ones. It will also create a new MBR (as part of the partition creation/formatting process). IF for some reason that process fails to delete the Unix partitions, you may want to use Partition Magic to delete the existing partitions, create and format new ones in NTFS or Fat32.

It really should be an easy, painless process.

If the Win2K boot CD cant delete and rewrite the partitions, find out what the manufacturer of the drive is, download their toolkit and perform a low-level format first. Then boot from the CD and create partition for your install. Sometimes other OS write to "unreachable" sections of the disk and Win can't work with the disk. If you have installation failure/lockup try a low-level format.

Also check hardware compatability lists! I have had lots of fun because of semi-compliant modems lock up the install. I usually yank everything but video and network until AFTER the OS is done restarting, then put them back in one at a time...
