loading text into dynamic fields

I have the basic loadVariables thing down in a movie I'm working on. I've got one dynamic text field that loads variables from a text file in the same directory. The first page of text is supposed to pop up when the movie clip is first called, and update when "next page" is hit.

All this works fine, except that you have to hit "next page" and then "previous page" again before the first page text is displayed! The loadVariables action is on a previous frame, that only gets called once in the clip, so the data must already be loaded. And then I'm just jumping back and forth between two keyframes.

Can anyone help me? Why does it load the second time, but no the first?

have a look at this, and the fla. It might help, it might not. It takes a slightly different approach from your method and removes the need to jump between frames.

I've tried the fla in the zip file. Very neat, by the way. But it still doesn't work in my application. I even cut and pasted your code! I think, as with my form problem, that it has to do with being in a movie clip, rather than the main timeline.

But I did rearrange the buttons so it is obvious the user needs to select a page of text to display. That part works great. I just can't get it to display text before a user input.

Oh, well. It works well enough for now.
