loading swfs

I have a main swf that loads a drop menu swf. The drop menu swf has a stop() in the first frame, and the MC inside the drop menu swf has a stop in its first frame. When I load this into the main movie it plays right away, but when I test it (ctrl+enter) it stops like it's supposed to. Any ideas?
