Hi ,

I am a newbie at cisco switches. I need to load a new IOS on a cisco switch 4506E and i want to make sure the running-configuration is there after the new IOS is installed. Can someone please explain how to do this?

Thanks in advance!

You do a copy run start command which stores the config in nvram . When you reload the box the startup config will be loaded.

i apologize if I was not clear on the question. I need to upgrade the operating system(IOS) on a the cisco switch 4506 and I also need to make sure that the running config is saved when a reload the switch.

Doing what he said will save the running config to what is called the startup config. This is the configuration that is loaded after a reload (hence the name startup). When you upgrade the IOS and then reload it will automatically load the startup (it will not load a preconfigured factory default config if that is what you are thinking).
