Does anyone have a comprehensive guide to setting up load balancing for Metaframe 1.8....???? Looking for info on the function and expected impact of each of the available settings......

thanks.....

Only documentation I'm aware of is not that comprehensive - there are about 3 or 4 docs in the Citrix Knowledgebase which cover the parameters with a modicum of depth;
Useful docs include CTX426129 "Load Balancing and ICA Gateways on MetaFrame 1.8 Explained", CTX357152 "Application Load Levels Defined:", the MF 1.8 Admin guide and the books by Todd Mathers and Ted Harwell (essential reading!)

I do tend to find that every User guide, online or published book rather glosses over this topic, IME.

I think it's because the parameters depend heavily on server spec, user load and what the administrator is trying to achieve;

Here's an MS exam-type scenario I invented;

You have been monitoring all of your Citrix servers, and have noticed that some get hit harder than others. Following more in-depth analysis using RM, Systrack or Perfmon, it turns out that the 50 users on Server A are giving the processor a hammering, due to BadApp.exe, which currently only runs on Server A. You decide to publish BadApp.exe over Servers A, B and C, limiting processor use at a level that is acceptable to you. This has the effect of limiting overall usage of BadApp to 30 users, so you limit connections to BadApp to 19 per server (remembering that 2 connections are reserved for listening ports - if you limited an app to 2 connections, no-one would be able to connect to it). This has the desired effect, and all 50 users of BadApp.exe are using the app without causing performance hits on the servers.

In other words, most of it is trial and error and all is specific to your instllation - but the KB docs and free online guides are useful starting points.

I hope this is helpful CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk
