I'm looking to setup name resolution with LMHOSTS on my win98se machines that span into different subnets.Everything I look at kinda points me to believe I need a WIN NT or 2000 machine "somewhere" on my LAN/WAN to act as PDC...which I think WIN98 doesn't use (unless master browse machine name (netbios)is the term i would instead?

thank you

Need some more info on your network setup. Are you logging on to an NT domain? 9x can logon on to NT domains quite easily as long as its configured properly. That's another day though. For now, could you tell me a little more about your network setup? ________________________________________

all machines are WIN98se... on both LANS..just using Microsoft Networks which works fine on the local subnets.
I'm trying to get to my other LAN (browse/fileshare) across my T1..it is a point to point..doesn't go through anyone, just my routers.(building in back)
I can ping/tracert to the machines on the other side, but can't browse.Someone told me to use LMHOSTS because I don't have DNS,WINS etc...no NT server either..just Microsoft Networks.I have entries in HOSTS but that did nothing for me but only to be able to ping by NETBIOS names of remote machines...I was told I would have to use LMHOSTS..not HOSTS to get my setup to browse (and be seen in network neighborhood)

someone is right...
Hosts is to DNS what LMHosts is to WINS..

You set up hosts files, and can ping, right?
So do the same with lmhosts and you'll be set.
(you need to enable file/printer sharing if not already enabled)

You don't *need* an NT/2k machine, but it would be smart to get a nt4 or 2k server up and running with WINS, DNS, while your at it.. logins..login scripts, home directories...etc..etc.
