Our company has several BCMs on our network. We are in the process of moving the BCMs and IP phones onto a seperate VLAN. We are using "full DHCP" with "LLDP" on the IP phones.

After completing the transition for several offices, we came upon an office (office A) that has 1120E phones (just like the other offices), but the LLDP option on the phone is missing.

I noticed these phones are using firmware 0624C1H. IP phones in every other office (office B) have 0624C39. I pointed a couple phone from office A to office B, registered them to office B and did a "force firmware download". Unfortunately, the firmware level stays the same...

Does anyone have any ideas?

P.S - Office A is in Mexico and the other offices are in various parts of Europe and Asia. Thought I'd throw that in there in case regional settings come into play...

Thanks,

The phones with c39 likely have a firmware that is newer than that on the BCM's. To test, do a force firmware download on a c39 equipped phone, and I think you'll see it downgrade to what is on the BCM.

There is a patch out recently for 4.0 that includes new firmware, but I don't know what revision.

You got it exactly right. I did a force firmware download on a test phone in my lab and the firmware actually downgraded.

The wild thing is that the BCM I used to test on is on the latest patch 4.0.2.03a. Am I mistaken, is this not the latest patch?

Is there a way to upgrade the firmware on the phones other than through the BCM? Perhaps this is what the TFTP setting is for in the phone settings? I guess this means I would need to get my hands on the firmware from one of our vendors?

Thanks,

Yes, TFTP'ing software will upgrade them. I am not confident enough in the process to offer guidance, but I'm sure someone else is.

Firmware comes out more often that UTPS patches.

We also have several CS 1000s on our network. I went to into Element Manager and was able to download the latest firmware.

I'll try pointing an IP phone to a TFPT server and see what happens.

If you have CS1ks in your network, just update teh firmware there, point the sets to the CS1k temporarily and then once upgraded, point them back at the BCMs. That will work.

You really need to be running 0604DBG for LLDP to work reliably in my experience. There is also a known bug where the CS1000 will not not allow the SRG/BCM to upgrade it's firmware in certain cases. You can usually force the download with the command "umsUpgradeAll" from the Succession Signaling Server. So you may need to contact your voice reseller for support.

Alright, here is the wrap up. I put the firmware file on a tftp server and gave the phone the IP address of the TFTP server. I rebooted the phone, the phone did not download the new firmware file. The TFTP server gave an error of something something can't find 1120e.cfg file.

I googled "1120e.cfg" and found a Nortel document that lays out the tftp upgrade process. The phone uses a field from the file to compare it's current firmware level to the firmware level available on the server. If the server has a newer firmware level, then the phone pulls the new firmware file from the server.

Here is the text from the 1120e.cfg file I created:

[FW]
DOWNLOAD_MODE AUTO
VERSION 0624C4D
FILENAME 0624C4D.bin
PROTOCOL TFTP
SERVER_IP 10.32.0.24
SECURITY_MODE 0

I now have the LLDP option on the phone menu!
