LJ4000 "Perform Printer Maintenance" message is displaying. How can I tell if I really need to go for the full-blown maintenance kit (fuser and extras) or just replace pickup rollers?

What triggers the message to appear? Is it a factory default, or something that you can customize? The reason I ask is, we were having a local tech take care of this in the past, but the maintenance messages seemed to be popping up an unusual number of times during a 6-month period. We switched techs, and aren't seeing this message so frequently. I've gotten braver and have learned to do some repairs myself, and have replaced the fuser in our HP 2100, so I'm sure I could do this, too.

On the LJ 4000 series, the maintanence cycle is 200,000 pages. The printer keeps track of how many pages it's printed, and when that number gets to 200,000 it triggers this message. Now. If you've had the fuser replaced, and did not reset the maintanence count, then you may be replacing the fuser permaturely.

I'd suggest, printing a configuration page, and on the upper left, is the page count, and pages since last maintanence. The Pages Since is obviously going to be around the 200,000 page range, or a multiple of that, like 400,000 or 600,000 etc.. Check the total pages along with the pages since, as this can give you an indication if the fuser was replaced early, and the counter not reset. for example.

Total pages : 270,000
Pages Since Last Maint: 200,150

Something like this, would suspect me to think that a maint kit was put in the printer at around the 190,000 total pages marg, and the printer maint count was not reset. At which point I'd look at the fuser, and see what condition it's in.

Great advice from Tim there. Just to add there is a way to set the maintenance count to whatever you desire but it requires putting the printer in service mode by holding down a combination of keys while powering the printer on. For the 4000 it is the "select" and "cancel job" keys that you need to hold down while powering on. Then press the right menu and then select and service mode will appear in the display. Scroll through the service menu to get to maintenance count and that is where it is set at. Should be at 200,000 which as Tim stated is the factory default setting.
