Hi

I have a Laserjet 4000 with a JetDirect 600n network card.

The printer seems to be fixed to IPX and I would like to use it over TCP/IP.

The Network Printer Installer from HP Does not seem to allow me to assign an IP Address.

How can i do this?

Thanks B

Get webjetadmin from hp.com. Its annoying, last I checked you have to register first.

You might have to refresh it a few times to discover the device, or even type in the ipx name, but it should discover it, and allow you to enable ip.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

The other way to do that is to hard-reset the card, use ARP to assign an IP address to it so you can telnet to it, and configure it that way.

If the card should happen to be locked to IPX operation do a cold reset on the printer with the card seated in it. Before doing so, make sure you have copies (menumap/configuration) of the printer setup. The cold reset will clear settings back to factory default on both the printer and the card.
Cold reset :
Press and hold down the green Go button when powering on printer untill it reads "Cold reset" in the display.
When the printer has initialized, allow it a few mins. to search for a server assigned IP (if available !) Else print a configpage on the printer and check the autoassigned IP (usually 192.0.0.192)

Here's something to try.

Here are the steps (in newbie fashion).

1. Find out the IP address of the desired printer. (You can get this information from the self test page of the printer, or cheat and use the HP network install wizard to detect the available printers on your network. You can always cancel at the first available option, since you know the wizard won't work for you anyway.)
2. From the Windows Desktop, go to START
3. SETTINGS
4. CONTROL PANEL
5. PRINTERS
6. ADD PRINTER
7. LOCAL PRINTER
8. NEXT
9. CREATE NEW PORT
10. Arrow down to STANDARD TCP/IP PORT
11. You will get a pop-up "Welcome to the add standard TCP/IP printer port wizard"
12. NEXT
13. In the Add Port dialog box, you need to type the IP address of your printer in the Printer Name or IP address box. The box directly below that will auto-populate with the IP information.
14. NEXT
15. FINISH

Hooray, you are finished!
