Hi all,

I have been been working with Livelink 9.5.0 Sp1 for about nine months now so I am still a newbie. I have now been tasked with the upgrade to 9.7 which after reading the 9.7 documentation....concerns me greatly. I have setup a vmware copy of my production server into a dev environment. I have had it tested by the end users and they're satisfied it is working properly. Currently I have my dbe working on the OT sql script to clean up the orphaned records in the test db. Once those are cleaned, I believe I can proceed. We are running Enterprise so I am pretty sure we have the common modules that others may have plus some custom ones. I plan to upgrade the system files first, then the modules, etc. My problem is that my company has no plans to buy the SDK builder module for the 9.7 upgrade(I currently have LL Builder on 9.5) because they feel that $30K is too much. How can edit my modules + custom modules once I upgrade? Is there another third party OScript tool out there that could help? As for the upgrade, I am aware that I am pretty clueless but not totally. Can others here share what issues they experience with the 9.7 upgrades? Any help would be very appreciated!

Thanks,

G

You need the oscript builder nly if you want to develop/change/look at how oscript works. No modules upplied by OT or vendors expect you to have it.I am sure vendors/ot will try/test modules on the specific environment before package it.You need the builder if you or somebody in your org has developed custom modules and you want to recompile it .I am not sure if there are third part tools for it.You could ask OT forums if there is such a thing.
also if things don't work as intended you could increase logs and have OT or the vendors to have it fixed.

Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the phone?

The standard upgrade to 97 from 95SP1 is reasonably simple, but without having more details about your modules, servers etc I can't be 100% sure. The 97 documentation ( includes an upgrade guide to assist you in this process.

For all of your modules you need to get hold of the versions for 97 of these modules and install them on your test system and check that they work. If you have problems with this post back here and someone may be able to assist.

As for the upgrade the best bet is just to use the VMWare image and do the upgrade repeatedly until you are happy that you can do it, or get someone from OT / Partner / Consultant in to assist you with it.

Great!

I am getting started right now. I have cleaned my db of orphaned records so we are ready to rock. I will post the status as soon as I have one!

Thanks ggriffit!

Well,

It's been a month now and my upgrade is a mess. I am not confident I can do this at all. I am already investigating the option of building another 9.7 server w/o an upgrade. The db side is fine and I was able to upgrade that. I removed all incompatible modules, then installed all the new ones. When I log in there are no objects in the enterprise workspace. Also, IIS failed during a few of the new module installs leading me to believe they're corrupted. I returned several times to get them installed. IIS has been plagued with CGI errors after the upgrade. IIS was dead for a week and then all of sudden decided to start serving my site for this. I know I have one custom forms module which I will get cleaned up by a consultant using LLBuilder. As for other customizations, I don't know, but I believe they are there in the livelink support directory, or somewhere. Maybe appearances, can't be sure. Right now I am seeking help of OT support but they are slow with any help at all as usual.

why do you say after an upgarde there are no objects in the workspace.did the db upgrade happen at all.if you query kini that should give you the version of the scehema. Also how is an IIS issue something that OT creates, would it be better if it was apache? It is just a web server right .I just think that you are getting overwhelmed by the system.Install a new 9.7 system with a starter database, then look the the windows structure, all the core mods are in the module directory why did you think modules will be in the support directory ?

Once you see what a 9.7 looks like comapre the modules in your 9.5 one by one and see how much progress you can make.

I feel the job is not very strightforward for a starting admin, but
beleive me it is not as bad as it sounds.

do you have any logs from the server when you do each request, these may give people an indication of where the issue is, briefly the logs are as follows :

a TRACE file is a Livelink Dr. Watson type error
a THREAD log is the request inside Livelink
a CONNECT log is the Livelink - DB details

There are several other types of logs which become important when looking at different things, but these three are the most common.
