If you're talking about the really old 6/16s the short answer is no, Nortel doesn't provide a way to easily replace the built in lithium battery on the motherboard. They can be sent out for repair/refurbishing but why bother? The correct recommendation would be to upgrade to a cabinet made in this century like the CICS.
If you can find a battery, yes you could replace it by cutting the leads and soldering the new battery in place. Thats how they did it on computers in the old days.
If you have a 616 and software is DR1 you would replace the 5V 1F memory cap on the motherboard. If you have DR2 or higher programming is stored in the software cartridge, so you would replace the memory cap in the cartridge.
As for the 824, if you have DR1 or DR2 you would replace the memory cap on the motherboard (not for the faint of heart as it is easy to rip the traces). If you have a 2-piece software cartridge (DR3 - DR5) then you replace the 2 memory caps in the data cartridge.
Memory caps for Norstar systems are available from Refurb Supplies.
