I'm having an issue accessing one of my pc's from my home network. I have the following setup:

-Windows XP Pro
-Netgear Wireless Router
-Cable Modem
-SP1

Both PC's are part of the "home" network.
Windows Firewall is turned off.
3rd party Symantec Firewall is off.
File sharing is on.
One pc called (desktop) is a desktop pc hard wired to the router via Ethernet (RJ45). I can see the other pc (laptop) and i can see shared files on it.
I can ping the desktop from the desktop. I cannot ping the laptop's ip from the laptop or desktop. I cannot see the desktop pc from the laptop. Any ideas? It was working for sometime and just recently stopped. When i use the network setup wizard it says that the ethernet driver is not connected. I'm pretty sure i dont need that since im connecting to the net thru the router. Any thoughts?

you have something wrong with you network adapter is sounds like, goto control panel, system, hardware, device manager you should see a question mark or exclamation point, which should sat ethernet adapter. you need to reinstall driver.

if this is not the problem are you connected to the internet with the laptop and what is the operating system of each one, are they both xp pro

stuuked...both pcs have win xp pro.
im using the netgear wireless network driver and it seems to be ok. I'm getting out to the internet. I can ping my laptop from the laptop but i cannot ping the desktop from the laptop. no exclaimation points in device manager.

I had a similar problem where (on some occasions, seemingly randomly) I could not share files or printers with other computers on our home computer peer network. I could ping all other computers, including the residential gateway, but not myself (using 127.0.0.1 or my own IP address). the problem was probably our Symantec Personal Firewall 2004. Rather than disabling it altogether we changed the configuration of the Networking settings to include all the IP addresses we needed. (Personal Firewall>Configure...>Networking tab>Add...) Here I added the range of IP addresses on the network. Now I could see files on other computers, but I still could not ping myslef. So I also added the loopback address 127.0.0.1 and I can now ping myself too. Hopefully this has solved the problem.

bottom line, disabling this is not good enough, have to add the ip addresses your sharing with.

STUUKED

Again, I can ping the router and myself (wireless laptop). I just cant ping the desktop pc from my wireless laptop. Where do i find the loopback address and settings? In the router settings or on my windows settings? where do i add the range of IP's as well?
