I think it is a terrible idea to build your first linux from scratch. Unless you come from a long-time Unix background, I would recommend that you build the default from one of the distributions and try to understand what's been installed, their dependencies and services, and make your own decisions about how you'd customize.

You don't make your own clothes do you? No, you buy off the rack, then you buy tailored clothes, then custom-fit clothes, and then you could make your own.

I second thedaver's advice. Install the full Suse (or the default, or whatever's easiest), play with that for a while, build some packages manually to get the feel for what's going on, then try to build a Linux from Scratch. You won't learn anything if you just blindly copy and paste the commands from the LFS book.

However, if you're dead set on trying the LFS first, a good list of the base packages required to build an LFS is... well, LFS. I don't know what Suse's install is like, but I'd bet there's a "minimal install" or something similar. If not, install as little as it will let you, including all the packages LFS lists (don't forget the -devel versions of those packages, which might not be included on the install CDs).

my first time loading suse i had a really small hd to work from (10meg?) you can load just the base packages only and
get a feel for lynux. didnt do much with that install but learned a lot. The have fun message cracked me up.

if it is to be it's up to me
