List of Categories from MS Outlook

I need to write something which looks at all the appointments in the calendar (within a certain date range) and lists the minutes spent on each category.

Getting just a list of categories (preferably as an array of strings) is what is giving me the problem, even though is sounds simple. Does anyone know how to do this?
