Sorry, real newbee here, where can i get a list of basic commands w/ sample syntax to do some admin checks on the server and/or database ??

thanks

If you don't have a manual set, get UNIX for dummies.
Once you get into the system you use "man command".
The online manual has the syntax. Ed Fair

thanks Ed !!

how about a way to view the unix box like being in front of the console, VIA windows XP or windows 2000 on a remote laptop ??

Remote serial or remote IP?
I use a laptop regularly to access machines I support, but since it is a old,old 386 I use serial with external modem.
From my browser I telnet across into a testbed machine, or I did until I crippled the testbed last week. Ed Fair

remote IP
but we need it to show exactly like your in front of the console any good windows type program ??

thanks

There are a number of good Unix emulation programs for windows...some of the better ones are:

Exceed
TUN

Out of all the ones I have used, I liked those two the best, with Exceed being my favorite since it more accurately emulates what Unix is really like, though I forget how much Exceed costs. I know that TUN is up there around $300 or so for one license.

Others which do not cost as much:

Anzio Lite
HostAccess
Rumba (Not sure on this ones cost.)
Tera Term

These were all okay, out of these four I would choose Rumba since it offered the best solution for multiple platforms, unix, mainframes, etc..although Rumba does require a lot of overhead from your PC.
