I currently have a dedicated tower I use as a server that runs off of a Intel X58SO board with an i7 Nehalem 920.
Found here:
It was brought to my attention the SATA controllers may cause a problem in setting this machine up as a multiple virtual host server box.
My intention is to install Ubuntu Server 10.10 (Not really production just personal use) and Windows Server 2008 environments. I haven't yet decided on which system I want to use as the root of the machine but I am thinking the linux distro would probably be more preferable to Windows 2008 as I remember the boot loader being finicky about linux, and that the root system can be paired down to minimalist functions.
So I am wondering if there is anyone else who has come across this issue or can confirm or deny if the motherboard will cause issues with this circumstance.
I'd prefer to not have to purchase new hardware for the time being though I later plan to get into buying a few cheap rack systems. Currently the other motherboard I have available is a GA-MA790GP-DS4H with a Gen 1 Phenom 9950.
I have considered making that move anyhow as the 790GP system has more ram and as far as processor is concerned, I could use the i7 on my main machine more then I could the Phenom.
Program recommendations a plus, thanks in advance. If I missed any information just ask and I will provide.
