Hello All,

I have the following and am missing something, but I don't know what yet (sigh):

I have a windows 9x box that has a routed address in one office. In another office is a linux box running PoPToP (pptpd) and I can make a VPN connection between the two machines.

From the windows box I can then telnet/ping/traceroute over the VPN to the linux box, and from the linux box I can ping and traceroute to the windows box. Also if I check the logs, the connection is made and the route is up between the boxes. The VPN is up!

From the linux box I can see the internet and also the private network, BUT I have obviously missed something, because I can't see the private network from the windows box.

What I want to do is be able to see the private network so that I can log onto a windows NT terminal server over the VPN.

Any ideas of what I might missed? If requested, I can post the configs and a diagram on a web page.

Thanks, David

Have you set up a route on the M$ box to the private network using the Linux box as the gateway?

I think the syntax for this on the M$ box is:

route add <destination network> mask <netmask> <Linux box address> metric x

Remember to specify the full address for the destination network. ie, if it's network 10, then use 10.0.0.0. Netmask is whatever is in use on the private network, and "x" for metric should be > 1, cos presumably this is over a dial-up link. 3 or 5 should be suitable.

If you've done this, then is IP_FORWARDING turned on in the kernel on the Linux box? I believe this is needed if you need to use the box as a gateway. (Use xmenuconfig to reconfig the kernel - the option is well detailed in there.)

HTH.

do you need to make entries in you windows lmhosts file? I was told this by someone however I have not tried it myself.

war...

Windows 95\98\NT all have a hosts and lmhosts files these files need to be filled with names to ip addresses like the hosts file on a linux box!
Simon Jones
sijones_uk@yahoo.com
<a href= Allandale Youth Works
God am good!!! and good lookin :)
