linux virus

It's not a virus, it's a trojan, and it is not dangerous
if you use proper precautions and use prudence in installing
unknown source packages and handling email attachments.
If it does get into your machine there is a a chance of severe
problems if the "virus" is executed with root permissions.

Hi,

The most complete info at the moment on this seems to be here --> . It could be described as a virus as well as a trojan insofar as it does attempt to infect (elf) executables on the local box rather than just hide and provide a backdoor. However, the key question vs an equivalent windoze effort is how does it spread to other boxes ? That doesn't seem too clear but it should be much more difficult on Linux for reasons of security design, etc., and the lesser use of mime types that cause email attachments to be 'triggered' . See this for what people had to say last time --> .

As marsd says, the best policy is to verify the authenticity of stuff you install and to be careful with emailed attachments. Its arguably 'after the event' and as such doesn't prevent infection, but tripwire should detect instances where trojans/virii attempt to change executables.
Regards
