Sounds like it may be something went wrong with the DHCP setup on the box.

Anyone else? IBM Certified Specialist - MQSeries

On my ppp linux server setup, my IP addresses are assigned in the /etc/ppp/options.ttyXX file, depending on which modem the port is on. I have something like this in that file:

serverip:clientip
netmask 255.255.255.0
proxyarp

I also have the clientip in the /etc/hosts file on the server. Double check that, and check /var/log/messages

I do not see anything in /var/log/messages concerning this. Ot worked fine up until recently. I have connected to this same system via PPP many times. James Collins

Strange that it would just stop working. What kernel/distro is this on? Is that the only problem with the machine (i.e. does the other networking functions work properly?)

Has your customer changed anything on the machine? Bruce Garlock

Everything seems to be fine. Linux RH7. Network functions appear fine. The error on the windows side is
TCP/IP CP reported error 738: The server did not assighn an address.

Any clues? James Collins

Is IP forwarding enabled?

echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

I remember helping you get this thing going, so if it was working correctly, then something must have changed. I've had one system setup as a dial-in ppp server run fine for over a year without being touched, so something must have changed in your configuration. Has the system been rebooted since the setup was working? Bruce Garlock

IP forwarding is set up. And it has been working. All the seeting for PPP are correct. As for something changing, I feel something has. The tech who fixed a modem issue with this system a few days ago insists he changed nothing. But you are correct. Something has changed. I just cant figure out what. James Collins

It's probably best that we step through all the files associated with the setup, to see what has changed. What modem issue was the server having? Did something in /etc/mgetty+sendfax change? What does /etc/mgetty+sendmax/login.config look like? Is it calling the right script for pppd? Bruce Garlock

The tech had to replace the modem its self. The /etc/mgetty+fax/login.config has not changed. ( I verified it with a customer who has a working Linux PPP server). All files look identicle between the two systems. James Collins

Yes. The error now is a "Error 737. Loopback was detected". This is not making any sense. We did not make any changes. We have been able to PPP in before. Now we cant. James Collins

Hi,

Had a look around and the following is a suggested resolution of a D.U.N error 737 -->

However, another one said :

"Go to the Dial-Up Networking Express connection and select the Server Tab, press the TCP\IP Setting button. Check Use default gateway on remote server, if already checked uncheck it, and try the dial-up again. "

So.. don't know what you make of that !

Regards

Well I am still at a stand still on this issue. I get loopback detected and nothing seems to fix it. Any more suggestions? James Collins

What does your /etc/mgetty+sendfax/mgetty.config look like. This is where the modem init commands are located, and you may want to specify E0 in there. Also what kind of modem is this? It may be that E1 is part of the modems ROM somewhere, and is not properly getting changed, or you may need to write the change to the modem.

Since the only thing that has changed in your configuration is the modem, we should probably concentrate on that.
