I have just set up a linux Red Hat 9, connected to the internet thru a 56k modem. It can access the internet o.k

I have a Windows 98 PC (ip address manually set to 192.168.1.2 and gateway set to 192.168.1.1) connected as a client. I have samba running and can connect to the linux server (samba 192.168.1.1) via network neighborhood etc quite ok and have mapped a drive s: all works ok.

I can ping 192.168.1.2 from the linux machine ok but if i type '192.168.1.1' in the address line of windows explorer iget nothing?

Although i can connect to the internet thru linux box, I cannot thru windows using the ethernet?

Reading a howto i tried

route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev ppp0

but this stopped the availablitiy of the file sharing samba services and i still couldn't connect to the internet thru the windows box

This is my first linux experience and need help.

Any help would be grateful

for internet use you probably want to look into proxy servers ... :

link849 look into NAT (network address translation) ...

as far as accessing the linux box from windows, have you tried accessing '\\192.168.1.1' in the explorer window? windows needs the double back-slash.

If you wish to use a proxy server, RedHat 9 comes with Squid and Privoxy on the Installation CD's.
I prefer Squid although Privoxy has some nice functionality. (If you have the firewall, iptables or ipchains, make sure they accept the connections)

If you don't use a proxy server and prefer the routing option, you need to configure the Zebra daemon or gated. (Both included with RH9). Zebra is easier to configure!
