I noticed today when looking over a list of servers that the Linux based were consistently better priced than other options. So I have a question --

If a person moves an entire site from a unix based to a linux, are there any changes that must be made to any files (especially cgi)? or from the client's point of view, are they essentially interchangeable?

If your existing Unix server used Apache as webserver.
Apache on Unix migrate to Apache on Linux. That should not a big problem. The Apache setting will change because of the different version of Apache. So you need to adjust your existing Apache setting.
Good Luck.....:)

it depends also on userload and other factors. The really big ass servers are still running unix because linux can't do EVERYTHING, and there is something about it not being able to scale|UP TO A POINT. To be frank, i don't usually deal with that kind of limits, so i don't have to worry about it.

But if you are shopping for servers, we will have to ask for what kind of setup said server will be used.

As for software, a cgi is a cgi is a cgi. just make sure the files and links are correct in the filesystem, and run the same kind of server ( ex: apache) . there are a lot of applications compatible cross unix platforms thanks to the miracles of Make and all of the little checks it does for you.

cheers.

Thank you ady2k. Please forgive basic questions, but I am not a server guy -- is the "Apache setting" otherwise known as the IP address? or is it something entirely different?

To the best of my knowledge, I've never had to adjust my Apache setting at any of the web servers I've used for my various sites, so am wondering whether or not it is even something I would need to be concerned about as a client....
