I want to use Linux (any version) as a server for my other PC's. I have windows 98 and 2000. The main aim is to emulate a remote linux server so I can test my php files before going on line.

Currently my only methods of testing are either to update my web pages (ftp file to site) or use IIS and apache, mysql and php on my local machine running windows 2000.

In a nut shell.. Can I make the My Linux PC serve my windows 2000 pc and have the 2000 think its on line...

One possible answer would be to have a browser which automatically decodes and displays php code as a html doc or does linux offer the required tools to build and test php files locally.

Hi,

You can easily do this. You just need to set up the linux box and network it into your local network (I presume you have one already from what u say). Apache, mysql & php are 'native' to linux in the sense that the windows versions are really secondary ports of products originally coded for linux/unix.

You would need to install those three packages on the linux box but its far from difficult. Your problem then would just be the dns side. You can either set up bind on linux as a proper name server and point the clients at that for resolution, or put the host names in the \winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file (or wherever that file is on W2K & W98).

Regards

Any decent boxed distribution would be a cure for your ills-if you have even a minimal PC laying around you can run an apache server that will do the job. The mysql install and config may be a problem if you have never worked with linux.
