Ok. I know how to set up network shares on a linux box so Windows machines can access them What I know is share level securiy. I need tighter security. I need to know how to setup samba for user level security. James Collins

Hi,

Well up to samba 2.0.x there were options of 'security = user', 'security = server' and 'security = domain' in order of sophistication. From the new samba 2.2.x series you can do virtually anything that a win2k server can do - trusts, unified logons, etc. You should have a look at the samba howto collection --> .

At the most basic level (security = user), you would just define parms in the share definitions in /etc/samba/smb.conf - something like this :

[sharea]

path = /usr/samba/groupa

browsable = yes

read only = yes

valid users = user1 @group1

write list = root @group2

The @group1 type syntax means all users who are in the linux security group of the same name. In case you are not using it already, its by far easier to use the 'swat' tool to admin samba --> (if you have it installed) .

Rgds
