Redhat 6.2...when transferring files, ftp or file sharing, the server reboots. Client wanted a larger hard drive so I installed Redhat 8.0 and restores data. Same problem...I am running 2.4.18 kernel. I am about to install 2.4.20 kernel. Any suggestions? Bad hub, NIC, Motherboard, wire??????

Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Did you check /var/log/messages for any errors?

I thought hardware too. I installed kernel 2.4.20 and connected the server to my laptop with a crossover cable...to rule out network problem. I didn't find anything specific in the messages file, but I will look again. I'm going to try to disable the onboard NIC and install another. I will keep this posted..

Definitly sounds like a hardware problem. In most similar cases I've seen, it turned out to be a bad motherboard, but unfortunately it can be almost anything. Check for devices that could possibly be overheating. Check that the heatsink and CPU fan are properly connected and that the motherboard isn't grounding out anywhere.
