Hi,

I'm trying to get openLDAP working on our linux (debian-potato) box. The package was installed without errors. Now I followed the "Quickstart" Guide from the OpenLDAP page. I can't seem to add an entry. There is an admin password that was designated. I made an LDIF file. But the add operation always fails on a bind saying "permission denied"

The server process is up and running without any obvious problems.

Can someone give me some clues as to what could be up?

Make sure that you are using the admin dn and password that you setup
during the install. If you are using that id correctly, then the next problem
could be that the id of the admin is not withing the context prefix of the
directory that you setup.

for example:
If I setup a directory with 'c=us' at the top, I cannot have a admin id
whose dn string is 'cn=manager', I must use something like
cn=manager,c=us to make sure that the dn of the admin is below
the c=us branch at the top of my directory. I have been bit by this
one. I have never seen this on any other slapd directory, but OpenLDAP
seems to have this rule.
