I was wondering if there is a version of linux that can run on a hard drive based mp3 player such as the dell dj 2nd gen? what i want it to do is to be able to organize my files and work like a backup system. if it is possible be able to review word or notepad text files.

It can run programs that play mp3 files, but they have to be windows programs. Most common on linux systems are the 123 players... like mpg123 et al.

And while it doesn't have notepad or word, it has emacs, vi, Open Office, kvim and a lot of others. Most are avalible for free download (if not preinstalled) as most are free and open packages.
